Progress Updates

October 2011

The Review of the NHMRC/ASBT Clinical Practice Guidelines on Fresh Blood Components (2001) will result in the production of six modules as part of a comprehensive, evidence-based, Patient Blood Management Guideline. The modules are being produced in three phases as follows:

Phase 1:
Critical Bleeding/Massive Transfusion
Peri-operative
Phase 2:
Medical
Critical Care
Phase 3:
Obstetrics
Paediatrics & Neonates

Phase 1

Module 1 - Critical Bleeding/Massive Transfusion After undergoing public consultation, peer review and an independent AGREE II assessment the Critical Bleeding/Massive Transfusion module was approved by NHMRC last year. The module, the accompanying “quick reference guide” and a template massive transfusion protocol can be ordered or downloaded from this website.

Module 2 - Peri-operative Public consultation closed in April. Twenty five submissions were received. The Clinical/Consumer Reference Group met in July to consider the feedback and finalise the module. The module has undergone an AGREE II Assessment and was submitted to NHMRC in August for further review prior to NHMRC Council consideration in October.

Phase 2

Medical - The Medical Clinical/Consumer Reference Group is continuing to consider the evidence from the ongoing systematic review and to draft the clinical guidance for this module as systematic review is completed for each question.  The Group plans to meet 20th & 21st October to finalise generic question 2 and the clinical guidance chapter.

Critical Care - The Critical Care Clinical/Consumer Reference Group met in August to consider available results of the systematic review. The group continue to develop evidence statements, recommendations and practice points. The next meeting is scheduled for 28th November in Canberra.

Phase 3

Membership of the Clinical/Consumer Reference Group for the Obstetric module and Paediatrics & Neonates module is still being considered and the group is expected to meet in early 2012.
