National IVIg Management System

National IVIg Management System

At the Jurisdictional Blood Committee (JBC) meeting on 25 May 2007, JBC members endorsed the National Blood Authority to explore the development of a centralised IVIg data system. The JBC agrees that the development of a national approach to understanding IVIg use is clearly mandated under the National Blood Agreement.

With the increasing range of clinical indications for IVIg use, the JBC has asked the NBA to develop a proposal for a national IVIg data management system (NIMS) that will capture this valuable information. A Steering Committee consisting of representatives from jurisdictions, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS), clinicians, governments and patients has been formed to oversee the development of NIMS. This centralised NIMS will support and align with the implementation of the recently revised Criteria for use of IVIg in Australia.

In support of the Criteria, NIMS will enable the collection of data on requesting, ordering, authorisation and treatment outcome of IVIg. A key aim of the system is to provide accurate information on use and efficacy of IVIg which will be fed back to the clinical community. The increasing and competing pressure for limited product also highlights the need for greater awareness of efficacy so that supplies can be directed to areas where the product is likely to be of clinical benefit. The development and subsequent implementation of NIMS will aim to improve the appropriateness of use of IVIg as well as build awareness as to where present demand is occurring and identify possible future IVIg demand.
