To implement the annual National Supply Plan, the NBA has supply contracts with various suppliers of blood and blood related products which it manages closely to ensure that demand for product is always met.
Most plasma derived products used in Australia are manufactured by CSL Limited from plasma collected by the ARCBS under the CSL Australian Fractionation Agreement. Australia is, however, totally reliant on an imported supply of plasma derived Factor XI and fXIII, anti-inhibitor coagulant complex concentrates, Protein C and a plasma-derived Rh(D) immunoglobulin product. These products are either not economical to manufacture in Australia or, as is the case for IVIg, the Australian system is unable to produce enough product to meet demand. IVIg is accordingly imported as a contingency to supplement domestic supply under a Standing Offer.
A number of recombinant clotting factor products are also imported. These are selected for supply through regular and open tender processes. Contracts for the supply of products from 2006-2011 (which expire on 30 June 2011) are below.
New Imported Plasma and Recombinant Product Tender outcomes apply from 1 July 2011.
